Severance
I worked as the Compositing Supervisor for Season one of Severence for Apple tv as we tackled the visual effects of Severance with the goal of creating fully hidden effects. Yet, unbeknownst to the viewer, VFX was used extensively to create the world needed to tell the story. The realistic integration was critical to allow the tale to play out while visual effects lent a supporting role. Practical photography was augmented to create a plausible yet eerie workplace. Bland to the point of disturbing, Lumon exists in a world that is familiar but wrong. The exterior of Lumon was filmed at a fantastic location but it was further dramatized by removing the neighboring structures and isolating it with impassable terrain. These alterations help detach Lumon from a typical office.
Throughout the show snow is added to the exterior both for continuity and to establish the mood. As a result of shooting schedule practical snow intercuts with its VFX proxy unnoticed. Overall Severance included 800 VFX shots and an additional 1000 retouching shots all designed to be photoreal and invisible to the viewer.
